7 Days Course Outline:

  • Sharpening and setting up of tools and jigs

  • Lecture and demonstration on jigs:

    1. Hikouki-kanna

    2. Pin-stop planing beam

    3. Alternative method with kanna and thicknessing beam

    4. Cutting jig

    5. Angle jigs (22.5, 45, 30, 60 etc)

    6. Machine tool options

    7. Ha-ganna

  • Making Jigumi (foundation grid from which more patterns can be made)

    1. Square Jigumi

    2. Diamond Jigumi

    3. Hexagonal Jigumi

  • Cutting and deriving patterns from Jigumi

    1. Asa-no-ha (hemp-leaf pattern)

    2. Soroban-kuzushi (abacus beads pattern)

    3. Goma-gara (sesame pattern)

  • Practice making your own panel and pattern

  • Completion of foundation course is highly recommended but not required

Class Schedule:

  • Class size: 8 students

  • Lessons: Monday to Sunday, 9am to 3pm

  • Teachers available until 5pm

  • Our workshop space can be used daily for practice from 9am to 6pm

  • Course will be conducted in English

Additional Info:

  • Meals and accommodation are not provided.

  • We can however recommend hotels that are near Okayama Station.

  • Transportation will be provided daily between the workshop and Okayama Station.

  • You will need to prepare the following tools to attend the class. We can help you purchase on your behalf if you do not have them:

    1. Nakaya brand dozuki (with thin 0.2mm kerf blade)

    2. Bench Chisels 1.5mm (or any chisel under 3mm), 3mm, 12mm, 24-36mm wide chisel (Oire Nomi)

    3. Sliding bevel

    4. Marking knife (Shiragaki)

    5. Plane 54mm (Kanna)

    6. Straight edge & sandpaper

    7. Dai Naoshi Kanna

    8. Combination/Rigid Square (e.g. HARDENED Matsui Seimitsu Industries MATUI SM-15 Scoya Scale 5.9 inches (150 mm))

School Fees:

  • ¥400,000

  • Upon confirmation, we will send you an email with more information regarding accommodation options, tool purchase and the course so that you can plan your trip in advance.

  • If you are suddenly unable to attend the course we may be able to find a replacement from our waitlist and arrange for a partial refund.

  • In the event of unavailability, we will offer to add you to our waiting list.
